Lihue helicopter experience on Kauai

 January 19, 2022

Wow!  This trip was real but I hope I dream it over and over for the rest of my life.  It was like being a drone in places where one is not allowed to fly drones.  What I am referring to is the helicopter ride that Carl arranged while still at home.  Not our first helicopter ride but the first one without doors!

We showed up and met our pilot, a 30 something exMarine blonde WOMAN who must have weighed a whole 95 pounds, named Chrissie.  She immediately exuded competence and all misgivings about choosing a “no door” flight were erased…except she gave us fair warning that if we went down over water that we would spend the first ten seconds under water so that the blades would stop before we would  exit the helicopter and inflate our life vests. 😱😯😬

While this island is beautiful from the ground, there is nothing to compare with the razor thin mountain tops that I felt like I could reach out and touch, basalt canyons with depths as deep as those in the Grand Canyon, dozens of magnificent waterfalls, the multiple blues of the ocean below us, the exhilaration of seeing pods of porpoises right below us, and just the lushness of unadulterated land that one could never experience but for some sort of air flight.

Here is our pilot, Chrissie.
