Kaua'i, January 18 2022

We woke up very early this morning as our bodies have not quite completed the migration from Eastern Time to Hawai’Ian/Aleutian Time.  This gave us the opportunity walk down to Hikinaakalā (rising of the sun) which is right off the hotel property.  This temple, or the remains of it,  was built, perhaps, to celebrate the Rising Sun, no one is sure, but it is the first place to see the rising sun on the extreme Eastern tip of Kaua’i.  Because of this, it was the perfect spot for Sandy and I to enjoy our first cup of coffee on Kaua’i.

In late afternoon, learning first hand about a few more of Hawai’i’s COVID restrictions, we picked up our rental car and headed to ʻŌpaekaʻa Falls, a beautiful twin cascade of water pouring over a basalt ledge and dropping 151 feet.  Directly across the road is an overlook where we could see the Waílua Valley and its river winding to the Ocean.  It seems to be difficult to go anywhere on the island without being surrounded by or at least in sight of breathtaking natural beauty.

Driving back down the mountain towards our hotel, we came upon another ancient temple, Políahu Heíau.  This one was reasonably well preserved.  It is known to have been both a sight of massive human sacrifices and where future royalty babies were to be birthed.  They picked up both ends of the spectrum of life at this sight.

We finished up the day out at the Tiki Bar again with a couple of Mai Tai's, a fish taco and some serious stargazing.
