Lihu’e, Kauai

This morning, after a couple delicious cups of coffee, we went on a river cruise to the Fern Grotto which was on the only navigable river in any of the Hawaiian islands.  The Wailua River runs next to the Hilton Garden Inn where we are staying for the first couple of days.  We boarded the boat and the crew entertained us with Hawaiian music and even a smattering of hula.  The tropical scenery was beautiful and has been used in quite a few movies, including all three Jurassic Park movies, at least one Indiana Jones movie, Fantasy Island (with Tattoo).

This area gets an average of 600 inches of rain a year!  How did we ever get a sunny day to enjoy our boat ride?  The photo of Carl on the dock shows the Mountain known as The Sleeping Giant.  Just to the left of the white light is the giant’s head.
