Today was scheduled to be a lazy day, and Sandy and I followed that scheduling like it was our job. With last night's storm a thing of the past, and today surprisingly sunny, Sandy and I again trod around this little village.
The island is Ærø (Ai-er-r-r-oo), the town is Ærøskøbing (Ai-er-r-r-oo-koeb-ping). The island has approximately 7,000 residents, but each summer it has half a million visitors/tourists. But even with those numbers tourism is only the third highest industry here. First is farming, second is shipping with merchant fleets and most of the Danish Navy based on the eastern tip of the island. And, Æros is pretty flat, making it an easy island to get around on bicycles or tennis shoes. Today Sandy and I chose the latter. We saw basically the same things as yesterday although everything looked different in the sunshine. Today also allowed a few more of the shops to open up, giving us a chance to have some Danish pastries for breakfast and to make a midday ice cream stop.
I love these higgledy-piggledy lanes with not a true vertical, true horizontal or even just a straight line in sight. These houses give the appearance that they are leaning on one another and if you pulled one house out, the rest would all fall down like a line of dominos.
In the evening I went for a short bike ride, about an hour, but it did get me out into the rural areas of the island. I enjoyed the ride, enjoyed the countryside, and was glad that I got back in before the lightning, thunder, and rain started rolling in.
