Well, after dark last night I decided to drive to Volcano National Park. I thought that it would be good to see the lava at night. There was a risk in this, as was noted on our helicopter tour over the caldera proved, there was not always red lava in the Hala'uma'u Crater. My thinking was that with five nights left in Volcano I would go every night until I caught a glimpse of the glowing rock. To the trailhead is about a 25 minute drive and then another 2 and a half mile hike to the lookout. Not a bad hike, however, in the dark of night it seemed a little longer than it was. It was a good decision, two pools of hot lava, a lava flow and lava fountains 40 to 50 feet in the air. What a show! I spent most of my time just staring at the lava, through binoculars, but I did manage to put them down (actually loan them to fellow gawkers) long enough to take a few cell phone pictures.
