Hike the Kīpukapuaulu Trail …I’ve been looking forward to the “Bird walk” on this trail since we arrived here a week ago. We hiked it today but only heard birds, which was disaapointing but was quite nice anyway. We did see a couple of pheasants on our way out. The trail was a wonderful walk a professional botanist would love. A kīpuka is an island of ancient vegetation surrounded by a sea of younger lava flows.
Quite different from the rainforest we have been living in, it looks somewhat similar to our hardwood forests back home with some very unique species thrown in.
