Volcano, Big Island (Hawai'i Island), February 12, 2022

Today was another moving day and it took all of the day to cross the 30 mile 'Alenuihāhā Channel that separates Maui from the Big Island.  Well that is at least how long it took to get from our condo on the Kā'anapali Coast on Maui to our "Jungle" AirBnB in the rainforest that clings to the eastern side of the gigantic Kīlauea Volcano.  Of course all the moving includes packing (while constantly being distracted by the whales cavorting right off shore), driving to the Maui airport, turning in the rental car, waiting at the airport, the quick 45 minute flight, picking up the new rental car and then driving 104 miles across the island to the new digs.  Yep, just about any way you cut it that's going to take about a day.

One last picture of Moloka'i with its almost constant cloud hat.

There was much to enjoy also, as we got some last looks across the water to Moloka'i.  At the airport we ran into Dave and Sandy and their niece with her boyfriend.  They too were on the same flight to the Big Island but they are staying on the other side (the sunny side).  I learned that when Sandy Landefeld puts her mind to it she can find ice cream in just about any airport;  melting or not, she finds it.  Another discovery for me was that at least judging from the southern road to Volcano, the roads on this island are straighter and wider than on Maui, something I appreciated while driving at night to an unknown location.

When we got to our jungle bungalow it was perfect.  Buried in vegetation (in fact we had a hard time finding the house even after we parked in the driveway) it was exactly as advertised. Since being at this higher altitude it is much cooler than down at sea level so it was good to see space heaters throughout, a wood burning stove and Sandy especially appreciated the heated mattress in our bedroom.

Living Room (I've been trying to play that ukulele)

The wooden panels on the shower open so that you are essentially taking a shower in the rainforest.  The foliage is completely dense protecting our modesty.
