Today was a laid back day (this fits well with the Hawaiian way). Watching another sunrise we thought we would take a leisurely walk to the beach at the bottom of the 60 foot cliff upon which our Condominium is built. Earlier I had spotted a path that I thought would get us down there. Taking off full of optimism and the spirit of adventure we didn’t get more than 30 feet before the path devolved into a slick semi-muddy steep slope. Since it was headed down, and since the beach was down, we (and by "we", I mean "I") thought it was going to get us where we wanted to go. Not so, the path eventually took us to the sewage treatment facility for the housing complex and still forty feet above the beach. OK, check off septic system on my list of things to see in Hawai’i and slog back up to our apartment. About halfway back up the trail we ran into two nice couples originally from Israel but now Los Angeles also hiking the “crap trail" thinking they were going to the beach. We passed on our trail knowledge for which they were grateful and turned around.
We now came up with a better plan, we got in the car and drove to the little town of Hanalei about 15 minutes away. There we parked beside the road and walked along the narrow, tree strewn and lovely beach. It was very pleasant, certainly better than a waste treatment plant.
In Hanalei we found a little fish market. There I bought a bowl of Poke (a Hawai’ian raw fish dish) for lunch and a Kampachi fish to cook for dinner. We picked up a pineapple and a bunch of bananas and were ready to cook our “all Hawai’ian ingredient dinner. I pan-seared the Kampachi a fatty fish sometimes called yellow tail or amberjack and often used in raw fish meals. Seasoning with salt, pepper, garlic, and some spices I found in the cupboard we topped fish off with a pineapple/banana white wine sauce. All fresh ingredients, all from Hawai’i, what’s not to like.
