Island Hopping 2024: Giarratana, Modica with Friends

Friday April 12:  While Sandy and I are here for a fairly long visit in Giarratana, we have been planning our days as one fairly busy day followed by one fairly slow day followed by a busy day, and so on, and so on.  We stayed with such a schedule with Dave and Kristi.  Today is a slow day in which we revisited the hill town of Modica.  We started the day, as is our norm, with a trip to the café in Giarratana.  And, as is my norm I had a canolo and cafe americano (basically one of their expressos topped off with an equal amount of hot water).  We then made the very picturesque drive to Modica.  Sandy and I had visited this village earlier and thought it would be a great place to bring guests.  And, even though it was no longer new to us, it was new to Dave and Kristi and they both brought a new perspective of the town to us.

I know these canolis start looking the same, but they are all special to me!

Dave is a serious photographer, and though he was only using his iPhone to document the visit, he was doing it with a photographer’s eye, which in turn made me appreciate Modica even more.  Kristi enjoys trying to think about the people who currently live in these villages and guessing about different aspects of their lives.  A case in point was that as we were standing on the steps of the Cathedral, Kristi spotted three men way up on a terrace attached to one of the houses clinging to the cliff opposite us.  Within moments she was convinced it was a wedding, and she was well into the process of planning their wedding for them before we got her off the steps and on to her next adventure.

Two bachelor degrees, two advanced degrees, two CPAs, and by God we figured out the Parking Permit machine!

It was up this hill that Kristi was about to take charge of what she believed was a wedding

Not many World War II remembrances in Sicily.  This one honors the troops from Modica that fought along side the Germans on the Russian front

While in Modica we grabbed a lunch at an outdoor café where both Dave and I had Spaghetti Carbonara (this was one of my must haves while in Italy).

I am not a good shopper.  In fact my shopping prowess is as about as impressive as a goldfish’s memory.  Additionally, Sandy believes that I care nothing about fashion.   And, I do admit that when confronted with a rack of clothing, I transform into a confused mime, silently mimicking Sandy’s gestures in a pitiful attempt to comprehend the intricacies of color coordination and style.  These efforts never succeed.  When Sandy holds up a potential purchase and asks what I think, I will look at it reflectively and declare that she will make that blouse look beautiful.  Which only results in her putting it back on the rack and giving me a look of disgust.  Because of this I always assumed that she hated shopping while on vacation.

Not so, with Kristi as her new shopping partner, and with Dave distracting me Sandy seemed to have a wonderful time going in and out of so many of the shops in Modica.  She seemed to actually be enjoying shopping (and buying).  Who knew?  It turns out Sandy did not hate shopping, just hated shopping with me!  I can never thank Kristi enough for helping Sandy enjoy her shopping experience.

That night we all enjoyed a meal at Eventi Divini in Giarratana.  We all enjoyed very well prepared and thoroughly Sicilian meals.  I enjoyed for the first time in my young life “donkey”.

Kristi delighted with her gnocchi with no donkey.  The fun was in watching her interact with the chef to assure that donkey stayed away from her meal.

Into the second Negroni our conversation became more and more profound.  If only I could remember what we were talking about.

One would surmise we all enjoyed our meals.
