I particularly like days that start with destinations of good eats. Today our mission was to find malasadas at the southernmost bakery in the United States. Malasadas are Hawaii’s only donut. These are hole-less fried yeast dough that are traditionally covered with cinnamon sugar. They are best fresh and warm right out of the oven. This bakery did not let us down!

After we explored a couple beaches at South Point, we went to the Mark Twain Monkey Pod Tree. In 1866, Mark Twain visited the island and apparently planted a monkey pod tree here. While the sign didn’t say this, I read that his original tree was destroyed in a hurricane in 1956 but this tree grew from what was left of it. So I guess that counts and it IS a beautiful tree!
