Kā'anapali, Maui, February 9, 2022

We dropped Glenn and Sue off at the Kahului Airport this afternoon. They are headed for the Hawai'i Island (the Big Island) for a few days and then back to Florida.  On the drive back we stopped by the town of Lahaina.  Once a royal city for the King of Maui, then later the sin city of all the Hawai'ian Islands, after that the missionaries came and finally it is now a vacation mecca.  We enjoyed looking at the remains of an old coral rock fort, the customs house, and the missionary buildings.

For three decades Lahaina had been a stop for the whalers.  Much of the charm of the town were the beautiful women and the islanders relaxed attitude about sex.  The missionaries and island royalty did not approve of this behavior.  Rioting ensued, and the island natives drove the sailors back onto their ships.  The sailors got in the last word however, as they fired the ships cannon balls at the reverend's house as they sailed away.  In the past, I've had preachers make me mad, but I've never fired a cannon at any of them.

And of course, in Hawai'i a day without "shave ice" is like a day without sunshine.
