Sunrise
We have been looking at the Kīlauea Lighthouse from the window of our apartment. We decided to drive over and get a closer view. It was dramatic. I know GPS and other positioning technologies are making lighthouses obsolete, but something will be lost when the last torch is extinguished.
I’m ticking off the Hawai’ian must eats. So far we have done the “Poke” bowl (põ-kay), spam. Kampachi, fresh pineapple and island specific coffee. For lunch today we enjoyed another of the island's culinary cornerstones, shave ice. Available everywhere, it is like a snow cone except much softer, like snow. Our stateside snow cones are actually chipped ice. So, ironically a snow cone feels like eating flavored ice and a shave ice feels like eating flavored snow. Sandy had hers entirely flavored with strawberry, mine was a combination of POG (passionfruit, orange, guava - which is combined and considered one flavor), strawberry and lime. Adding to the experience is the ramshackle hut/truck it is served out of. We both enjoyed them and have promised ourselves to have more before this journey is done.
POG, Lime, Strawberry / 100% Strawberry
Just because we're in Hawai’i doesn’t mean that Friday night is anything other than pizza night. We found a nice pizza place down the road. I at least gave a nod to the location by ordering the Hawai’ian pizza. Sandy got a Greek pizza, perhaps nodding to some future trip.
