January 24, 2022. Kauai

So!  I have no photos to show the most exciting thing I have seen since we’ve been in Hawaii.  Sitting on our balcony, idly drinking coffee, I looked up and saw what I thought was a paddle boarder out in an area where I’ve not seen one before and then he disappeared  …straight out in front of us…when I told Carl, he reached for the binoculars and I reached for mine and what we thought we saw, at first, were a couple of spinner dolphins…but wait, these started breaching…they were whales!  Yes, for the next hour we watched a large one and a smaller one cavorting and enjoying the surf and the beautiful morning.

These were definitely humpback whales because over and over we saw them breach and show us their big white bellies and their very long pectoral fins.  Such beautiful giants!

When we left the house at about 11:30, we saw them both further down the shore still cavorting in the sun.

This is not my picture, but it is exactly what we saw through our binoculars!
