Everyone knows about the Cadillac Ranch outside of Amarillo, a bunch of Cadillacs planted nose down in the plains outside of town. This piece of art has been moved twice. The first time to move closer to Interstate 40 and “Route 66” in order to give it more exposure and secondly to move it further down the road as Amarillo kept growing nearer and nearer to it. Another interesting fact is that people are encouraged to spray paint it. So much so that there is a vender truck on sight selling spray paint. Sandy and I, thinking ahead for once, had bought our spray paint back in Oklahoma City. Note that it is Sandy vandalizing the Cadillacs. To help clarify her a plan, note that the colors are scarlet and gray. Her graffiti, states “Sandy (heart) Carl”. Just as it should.
Sandy and I first drove to Palo Duro State Park then drove the “Mother Road to Tucumcari, NM.
Very near the Cadillac Ranch stands the Giant 2nd Amendment Cowboy. This is not a political website, I’m just posting things we see along Route 66.
The restored Magnolia gas station in Vega, TX.
We reached the midway point of “Route 66” There is some controversy as to where the midpoint really is since there are so many different alignments. But this is the place that someone painted a line across the road, erected a sign and built a café called “The Midpoint”. So that’s good enough for me, 1,139 miles to Chicago or Santa Monica.
Here are a few other things we spotted along the highway.
Dinner tonight at the “Pow Wow Restaurant & Lizard Lounge”, where they serve New Mexican fare and the Blue Swallow Margarita.
