 DESTINATION: San Bernardino, CA

This was a traveling day to enter our last Route 66 state.  One thing that has been surprising to me for the last few states is  the many, many trains that are fully loaded with cargo shipping crates heading east and each one is usually miles long.  It is hard to imagine that there could be a supply problem in our country when I see these heavily loaded trains as well as the huge numbers of semi-trucks going the same way.  But…I also have seen empty store shelves.

Along the way, on old Route 66 we found a section near Amboy, CA, where people stopped and added their signatures on the north side of the Route with area stones.  So of course, Carl added our own…C + S while I took some photos.

Next stop on our way was the Bagdad Café.  There was a cafe that was built here in the 1950s and a  movie had been filmed here. Then the Café was named after the movie title.  Carl has seen the movie so we stopped to get some photos of the place which looked totally abandoned.

After taking a few pictures, Carl was getting back into the car when a small lady yelled to come inside and look around.  The lady said that she had been there for 25+ years, was a screenwriter, was working on opening the cafe in a few weeks and was working on her new movie called The Bagdad Café. While we were there a young man from Japan happened by.  The screenwriter seemed pleased that we had stopped and she took our pictures for us.

The ceiling was lined with t-shirts, mostly from other countries, left there by those who visited this strange little place sometime after the movie.

Here is the little lady screenwriter and her dog

This is what our road looked like all day long going through California

Until we got near San Bernardino when this is what we were in for an hour or so. 🤪

We were happy to arrive at our teepee for the night.
